14:54 16/08/2011 Corporate Responsibilty

Stratiis have signed up as team for Maggies Monster Bike and Hike in May 2012.

Monster is a 24 hour team challenge event, biking 30 miles and then hiking 8, 23 or 41 miles to our Bronze, Silver or Gold finishes. Maggie's will support you every step of the way to achieving your Monster challenge. It's not a race - it's a fantastic, exhilarating (and demanding!) experience you'll never forget! ( apparently) Maggies was a great source of help when one of our Directors became ill and were going to be raising funds to assist them in their good work.

14:54 16/08/2011 San Fransisco shuts down phone service

When it comes to shutting down communications technology during protests and riots, the United States is one step ahead of the UK.

Just one day after Prime Minister David Cameron told parliament that he is investigating the possibility of shutting down social networking sites in times of chaos and criminality, officials at San Francisco's Bay Area Transit system stymied cell phone access during a planned protest.

Organisers planned to protest over the killing of Charles Hill -- a 45-year-old man who was shot and killed by a BART (SF's Bay Area Rapid Transit) police officer on in July -- on 11 August.

On that day, officials from the transit service suddenly shut down all internet and mobile phone access for underground commuters. Later, an official statement from BART said that organisers, "stated they would use mobile devices to coordinate their disruptive activities and communicate about the location and number of BART Police."

"BART temporarily interrupted service at select BART stations as one of many tactics to ensure the safety of everyone on the platform," the statement read.

The cell phone shutdown (or, perhaps, the significantly increased police presence) seemed to do the trick, as the planned protest never materialised. "The commute home Thursday went off without a hitch despite rumours that BART service could be disrupted," the city's Examiner newspaper wrote.- Source Wired Magazine

14:54 16/08/2011 Research In Motion's 2011 roadmap leaked

Research In Motion's 2011 release roadmap has been leaked, giving us an early sneak peak of the company's plans for the year, and outing previously-confidential BlackBerry devices like the codenamed Monaco, Sedona and Malibu.

The BlackBerry Storm 3 (codenamed Monaco Touch) is a slender smartphone with a 1.2GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, a 3.7-inch touchscreen and a five-megapixel camera. That will come out around July or August 2011.

Joining the storm in August is the BlackBerry Bold Touch (codenamed Montana), which is a more traditional style BlackBerry, with a full QWERTY keyboard. It also has a 1.2GHz processor, but 768MB of RAM and a smaller, 2.8-inch touchscreen.

In August or September 2011, RIM will release the BlackBerry Sedona, which is a Curve device featuring an 800MHz processor, 512MB of RAM, a five-megapixel camera and a narrow QWERTY keyboard.

Looking into early 2012, the BlackBerry Curve (codenamed Malibu) touch is described as "The Accessible All Touch BlackBerry", and designed to be accessible and easy to use. It has slightly lower specs than its more business-focused cousins, and it packs a 3.25-inch display and five-megapixel camera.

The 7-inch Blackberry PlayBook tablet will be released in the United States during the second quarter of 2011: meaning sometime before April.

It should be noted that the release dates will probably differ slightly in the UK. The leaked information comes from the firm's CDMA device plans -- a North American phone network -- so whether all of these devices will get GSM editions for the UK is not yet known, or how long they'll take to reach Europe.

The roadmap also details how the BlackBerry 6 operating system will evolve over the year, detailing a few new features that will appear in future updates. We'll start to see support for digital compasses, APIs for augmented reality apps, a new virtual keyboard for touchscreen phones, a more customisable homescreen and improved multi-tasking.“
